Dogs are actually the most popular pet in the United States, holding first place for countless generations. It is now proven that dogs have a substantial impact on their owners.
Dogs are able to make their owners’ lives longer! Studies have shown that almost 4 million people with dogs had a 24% reduction in dying early. People who previously had a heart attack also benefit from owning a dog. They are 31% more likely to survive after cardiovascular disease if a dog is by their side. Their recovery after a heart attack is also better. Owning a dog can provide social and emotional support. Dogs are always there by your side, and they are great listeners. People can vent all their problems to their dogs without the guilt of dumping everything on them. Dogs provide free emotional support, especially during stressful times: “Having a pet with you during an anxious event could help reduce the stress of that event” (LaMotte). Dogs also keep people who are living alone from feeling lonely. Dogs need a lot of exercise, meaning a human needs to walk them. This could actually lead to new and unexpected bonds with other dog owners. In general, the average dog needs between 30 minutes to two hours of exercise daily, give or take a little. All of the walking people do with their dogs is also very beneficial for them. People who walk their dogs regularly have ⅓ the chance of getting diabetes as those who don’t. Exercise and walking is just healthy in general, and dogs force their humans to exercise. Some dogs are great jogging partners. When people are around dogs, their mood usually improves too. How can you not smile when you see adorable puppy eyes? People still do not know what makes these changes; the dog or the behavior. People who exercise and walk a lot are typically the type of person who would get a dog. People who do not exercise typically will not get a dog. It is still unclear if all the thought benefits of having a dog is actually because of the type of people who own the dogs. While it is not clinically proven that “‘adopting or owning a dog directly leads to reduced mortality, these robust findings are certainly at least suggestive of this,’ Dr. Glen Levine” (LaMotte). For people who are looking to improve their health or are feeling lonely, getting a dog is always an option. Dogs are a lot of work, so make sure not to get a dog unless you are prepared to put in all the time and effort to care for them. Dogs are not your toys; they are living beings. Other easier pets can also be beneficial, for example a gerbil or hamster. While they do not provide the benefits of exercise, they do provide all the other benefits dogs provide. https://www.cnn.com/2021/08/26/health/national-dog-day-2021-benefits-of-dogs-wellness/index.html https://www.forbes.com/advisor/pet-insurance/pet-ownership-statistics/#:~:text=at%20a%20Glance-,66%25%20of%20U.S.%20households%20(86.9%20million%20homes)%20own%20a,fish%20(11.1%20million%20households). Anatidaephobia Explained, Nora 12/13s
Under the Identity section of Bank Street Live, there is an article titled "Uncommon Fears." Within it are listed such fears as arachibutyrophobia, fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of one's mouth, and hydrophobia, fear of water. However, one fear listed is anatidaephobia, which is fictional.
Anatidaephobia (say that three times fast) is the fear of being watched by a duck. It was created by Gary Larson, the maker of the Far Side comic strips. Above is the panel for which the phrase was coined. While it is possible for someone to have this fear, it is not officially recognized by medical corporations. It is, however, used widely across media as a joke and is even featured on some streamer merchandise. The symptoms of anatidaephobia fall under the category of animal type. They are similar to ornithophobia, the fear of birds. While it is not medically recognized, anatidaephobia was created as a joke to say that anyone can be afraid of anything without the fear having a specific name. Be sure to keep being yourself and fearing your fears. Where Did That Phrase Come From?

The Derby Poisoner
|
For my first post, I have decided to write about Lydia Sherman, also known as the Derby Poisoner. I first heard about her while in the car with my family. As we passed through a small city in Connecticut called Derby, my uncle informed me about the Derby Poisoner. I was quickly drawn to the name, I wanted to learn more. I didn’t find out more until seventh grade when I was browsing Wikipedia. I found a page on serial killers before the 1900s, and the Derby Poisoner was on it. That link has led me to this, so I hope you enjoy the research I’ve collected!
Lydia Danbury was born on December 24, 1824 in New Jersey. As an infant Lydia was an orphan, but then her uncle helped raise her. At the age of seventeen she met her first victim, Edward Struck, at a Methodist church. They were soon married, and since Edward was a widower with two children, they soon became a family of four. Edward worked as a police officer in Yorkville, New York. Throughout seven years, Lydia and Edward had six children together. However the wonderful family life quickly declined when Edward lost his job, and fell into serious depression. With no chance of getting work, Lydia had to do something. She didn’t bring him to a mental health institution, instead she poisoned Edward, quickly killing him. Within three weeks, her three youngest children died. Over the next few months her remaining three children “caught an illness” and succumbed to death. She quickly fled to Connecticut, even though the murders went unnoticed.
In 1867, Lydia was hired to be a nurse in Stratford. She then quickly met and married a wealthy Litchfield farmer and fisherman, Dennis Hurlbert. Lydia was very careful and hoped people would ignore his unattractive features and old age, since she was quite younger than him. As Hurlbert got sicker and sicker, Lydia made sure everything in his will went to her.Everything in Hurlberts’ will then went to Lydia, as he got more sick. After just a few months of marriage, Dennis Hurlbert died. No one suspected anything, so Lydia quickly found a job. She took the job as a housekeeper for Horatio H. Sherman. She cared for his two children, as his wife had recently died. A few months later they got married! Sherman’s infant son caught sick, then his teenage daughter, and then last but not least Sherman died. Though in a later confession, Lydia said she didn’t mean to kill her husband, Sherman. A source, Connecticut History says “It was his liquor that contained the arsenic that quickly killed him. In her later confession, Lydia contended that she did not mean to kill him at all, only his children, and he may have accidentally ingested the arsenic thinking it was saleratus,” People finally were suspecting some foul play and a local physician, Dr. Beardsley, ordered an autopsy for Sherman's abrupt death. After finding poison in Sherman, they quickly performed an autopsy on his two children and Dennis Hurlbert. All came back with poison in their systems.
In June, 1871 police arrested Lydia Sherman in New Brunswick, New Jersey. In 1872 she was tried. The jury found her guilty with second-degree murder. As she waited for her sentence, she confessed that she poisoned her three husbands, and four children. On January 11th, 1873 she was sentenced to life in prison. In 1877 she escaped prison with the help of some friends, and fled to Rhode Island. Though she soon slipped up when giving a hotel manager's wife two names. She was returned to prison on May 16, 1878, within several weeks of illness, she died.
Lydia Sherman’s story is fascinating, yet it is a very complicated one. Though she only confessed to seven murders, it could have been as high as 10. Her childhood didn’t seem to be full of grief, so what started her manic killings? Most serial killers' childhoods are filled with sadness and abuse which starts their career. And though it would be hard to get any more information, it would be super cool to know more about Lydia. I hope this article has given you some good insight on Lydia Sherman and one of the different killers in the 19th century.

The Trouble With Fashion
SJ & Ella, 12/13s
A lot of people, mostly middle schoolers, are having trouble figuring out where they should buy their clothes. Some brands are overpriced, while others are bad quality. There are also the conditions of the workplace where the clothes are made to consider. This is a guide to tell you what brands you should skip and where you should buy from.
Lululemon is a very popular brand, but it is also very expensive. It costs around $20-30 for just a pack of hair ties. Some of their stuff is really nice, but $110 for a sweater? It’s overpriced, but if you like the stuff and you have the money, go ahead. Their quality is good, but it’s up to you if you think it’s a good investment.
Zara has some really nice clothing quality, but is it really worth it? My sibling recently received a sweater from Zara that was about thirty bucks. It is a cool looking sweater, but they don’t wear it and it looks sloppy. Really think hard and long about this. One sweater for thirty bucks? You could buy two or three sweaters at a thrift shop. The website for Zara also can be challenging to navigate. For example, a snowy winter costume costs around $33 for just a dress and no shoes. It is a nice color, but it looks a little too simple or basic for $33 and you could possibly buy a similar costume from another business.
Websites like Shein have recently become popular due to their extremely cheap items. You can buy a whole outfit for under $20. But after ordering their clothes, a lot of people have found that the clothes fray and break within the first couple of months. This clothing may be good for a one time use, but it’s not something you can continue to wear. They also have bad working conditions, lots of companies have child labor where people will get paid way below minimum wage and have difficult working schedules. An article from The Cut says, “Workers in both factories were working up to 18-hour days and given only one day off a month. In one factory, the outlet found women washing their hair during lunch breaks, and workers were penalized two-thirds of their daily wage if they made a mistake on a clothing item.”
Sometimes people are forced to make 500 pieces of clothing a day.
Thrift stores are probably one of the best places to shop. They are cheap and you can easily mix and match outfits. Thrift stores also may have perfumes, jewelry, and sometimes shoes. These places should be your first stop if you are on a budget. Additionally, wearing recycled clothes is better for the environment. Unfortunately, fashion is costly for the environment, using countless gallons of water and synthetic fibers, which are polluting the oceans. But sometimes it can be hard to sift through the clothing, because many thrift stores are small and crowded. There are also online thrift stores such as Poshmark and Depop, but if thrift stores aren’t always widely available and accessible to you, feel free to do some research on brands you would like to buy from.
We hope this list helped you decide where to shop and most importantly, where not to shop. Remember to keep in mind the durability and materials of the clothes you are thinking of buying.

FUMO Review
Amari, Oscar, Ryan 12/13s
Hello! We are back with another food review. This time, we have reviewed Fumo, an Italian restaurant on the Upper West Side. We went there for a relaxed dinner on Friday, March 10th. We were impressed with the environment. Right as we arrived, we were immediately greeted by the host and they seated us. Our waitress was amiable and took our orders with pleasure.
|
We got sourdough bread and olive oil as a free appetizer. The bread’s crust was crunchy and the inside was soft. The olive oil and the vinegar complemented the bread nicely.
Amari: Fumo was a great experience, and I loved the food. I got the rigatoni gamberi which was really good. The pink sauce was creamy and delicious, it paired well with the pasta. The shrimp that was in the pasta was tender, and although I don’t like shrimp, I thought the shrimp was really well made. The Parmesan cheese on top was the perfect match to the al dente pasta. The dish made me very full, but I still finished all of it. Overall the dish was great.
Ryan: I ordered the baked ziti. It came relatively quickly, and it was delectable. It was warm, cheesy, and the pasta was soft and cooked well. In my opinion, there was a bit too much cheese in this dish, but it was still tasty. I would definitely order this again the next time I eat here.
William: I ordered the buffalo pizza. It had Louisiana style chicken with blue cheese and mozzarella. It was also topped with cilantro and shredded cheese. I really enjoyed eating this because the crust was a little crunchy on the outside and very fluffy on the inside. The chicken was a little chewy but overall pretty good and went well with the whole thing. There was also enough sauce on the pizza. If I go back here I would totally get this dish again.!qq
Thomas: I ordered the Margarita pizza. The pizza had mozzarella cheese with tomato sauce on it. It was also topped with a pinch of salt and grated cheese to go along with it. I really enjoyed this pizza because it had the perfect mix of cheese and sauce. The crust, though a little bit hard and crunchy, was solid. The dough also complimented all of the ingredients very well. If I were given the choice to go back here again I 100% would.

Noche Mexicana Review
Amari, Oscar, Ryan 12/13s
Noche Mexicana II
Are you looking for a Mexican restaurant to fulfill all of your hunger? If so, Noche Mexicana II is the perfect place for you.
Info: Noche Mexicana is located on 842 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10025 on the corner of 101st
Noche Mexicana was a great experience for us, and we thought the food was really good. When we walked in we were greeted by a waitress who then sat us down. The menu contained many delicious dishes like burritos, sandwiches, and even chicken nuggets for younger audiences. The waitress was kind to us, and gave us a lot of time before ordering to decide on what to get. The restaurant was practically empty, because we came late and missed the lunch time rush, with only one other party eating there when we arrived. This was great because we got to sit immediately and eat after being there for 10 to 20 minutes max.
Ryan: I ordered the steak quesadillas, and an horchata. The quesadilla was delicious; it was cheesy, warm, and the steak was cooked perfectly. There was crumbled cheese and cheese sauce on top of it, in addition to the cheese on the inside. On the side, there was a tomato slice and chopped lettuce. The horchata was delectable. It was cold, refreshing, and it had a hint of cinnamon. It complemented the warm, soft quesadillas very well.
William: I ordered the chicken torta with a side of fries. The torta was very well put together and warm when I picked it up. It came with avocados, tomatoes, onions, and a whole chicken breast. The bread that held the torta together was fluffy, soft, and a little crunchy on the outside. Even though the chicken was a little chewy, the other toppings in the torta added to the juiciness of the chicken. The fries were easily just as good as the torta. They were warm, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. They were perfectly salted and greasy.
Amari: I ordered the chicken burrito, it was packed with flavor and had the right amount of everything. The chicken was juicy and the mixture of rice and beans was perfect. The burrito came with guacamole inside which cooled down your tongue after having a very hot bite. The tortilla was so soft and flavorful but not soft enough to break apart. The sour cream on the outside added a nice and creamy texture to the solid food. I got a mandarin jarrito which served as the perfect counterpart to the burrito. The burrito was super filling but I still ate every bite because of how good it was. Overall I think the environment was very pleasing.
Oscar: I ordered the steak nachos which had beans, guac, tomatoes, and cheese piled on top. Every chip felt equally covered with toppings and they weren’t soggy, but instead fresh, and crisp. The pickled jalapeños complemented the juicy steak, and the tomatoes had a fresh taste. The beans were warm and not too hot, and the cheese was perfectly melted over the crispy chips. I also ordered a spicy chicken burrito which had impeccably placed toppings so you got an equal amount of toppings with every bite.

Dinosaur Barbeque Review
Amari, Oscar, Ryan 12/13s
Hi there! During this review we went to Dinosaur BBQ, located on Riverside Drive and 125th street; close to the old Cotton Club. We all arrived there around 6:15 but were seated around 6:40-45 because one of us was running a bit late. The restaurant was fairly crowded, with every table taken. Our server was very friendly and kept referring to us as “sir”.
As an appetizer, we ordered nachos with barbecue pulled pork. The chips were warm and crunchy, and the soft pulled pork was a nice touch with the crunch of the chips. There was some spice, considering the jalapenos. The cheese sauce was warm and…cheesy.

Oscar: I ordered the 2 meat combo plates with USDA brisket and St. Louis ribs. The plate came with two sides and I chose to get macaroni and cheese, and fries. The meat was impeccably cooked and the brisket just melted in your mouth. The ribs had a deep smoky, layered flavor, with perfectly crisped skin. It came with 4 pieces of brisket, and 4 ribs all juicy, meaty, and flavorful. The mac & cheese was immaculately seasoned and the fries were salty and fresh out of the oven. I felt like the chefs took their time with everything on the plate and each item got the same amount of love. So far this was my favorite restaurant on our list.
Ryan: I ordered the USDA Prime brisket plate. The brisket was so warm and tender, and it had a bit of spice due to the jalapenos that sat atop the meat. For sides, I ordered french fries, mac and cheese, and the cornbread came with it. The mac & cheese were delicious; cheesy, warm, creamy, and just melted right into your mouth. The fries were salty but were a bit soggy. The cornbread was soft and it was fluffy. Dinosaur BBQ is among my all time favorite restaurants in the city. Whenever you’re in need of some delicious BBQ, this is the spot.
The History of Barbecue
Amari, Ryan, Oscar, William 12/13s
Amari:I ordered the Prime brisket and the BBQ pulled pork, with mac and cheese and baked beans. The brisket was tender and flavorful. I thought the sauce added the right amount of tang to the meat and made it perfect. The pulled pork was cooked to perfection and was very tender and kind of sweet but not overpowering. The mac and cheese were perfect. It was cheesy and savory. It was the best thing I could have asked for. It was the best compliment to the brisket and pulled pork. Overall I think the food was very good and they all complemented each other.

Even though humans were making barbecue 1.8million years ago, the barbecue we know today started around the 17th century. The word Barbeque comes from a Caribbean tribe's word for ¨grilling on a raised wooden grate¨ Barbacoa and was recorded by a Spanish explorer. In 1769 George Washington attended a ¨Barbicue¨ in Alexandria, Virginia.
When America started to expand to the south, Barbeque followed it. South Carolina is considered the birthplace of barbeque food; it is said to be the first state that had it. There are four main types of barbecue in U.S.A.: Carolina, Texas , Memphis, and Kansas city.
Texas style barbecue is mostly slow cooking the meat over a wood fire and to let the meat come off the bone. It is also more centered around beef and they use mostly salt and pepper rubs to cover their meat. They use a multitude of ways to prepare the meat. This is also the most popular style of BBQ in the U.S.A.
Kansas is a combination of the other three states. In Kansas city, they use a wide variety of meats to make their barbecue. They have all of the other three styles combined into one. One thing that is distinct to them though, is their burnt ends, which are typically pork or beef.
Carolina style barbecue is the oldest style of barbecue in America. It is pork either pulled or full and is drenched in rub and vinegar while cooking. There are four different types of Carolina barbecue. Those being Eastern North, West and Lexington with different ways of preparing meat. Some of the ways are slow cooking, cooking over a pot, and different toppings.
The last style is Memphis style Barbecue. In this style there are two ways to cover your meat, dry and wet. They are also very into their rubs and some of them can contain more than 40 different spices with the most popular being salt and pepper. You can either cover your meat with dry spices like salt and pepper or you can in different kinds of barbecue sauce and other sauces.

A New Yorker’s Top 5 Manhattan Restaurants, Jeremiah, 11/12s
As a foodie New Yorker, I have discovered some of the top restaurants in all of Manhattan. Here is my opinion on the top 5 restaurants in Manhattan. My opinions are probably not the same as yours, so keep in mind that this is MY LIST!
#5: Mamas Too
In my opinion this restaurant has the best pizza in New York City. This restaurant has pizzas of all kinds. From Vodka sauce pizza to Angry Nona pizza, Mamas Too has it all. If you are willing to wait a ten minute long line for some delicious and flavorful pizza, you’d better go to Mamas Too, on Broadway and 106 Street.
#4 Jacob’s Pickles
This restaurant has all kinds of food. If you like classic American food, then try this restaurant out. This restaurant has amazing decor and the service is awesome. The servings are enormous and the food is delish! Jacob’s Pickles is a good choice if you like eating outdoors because they have comfortable and cozy outdoor seating.
#3 Sylvia’s
If you are wandering in Harlem and you see a light yellow sign and it says Sylvia's, what would you do? Personally, I would eat there. Sylvia’s has the best soul food in all of the United States. In my opinion their fried chicken and mac and cheese is a must try. Sylvia’s is probably the most iconic restaurant in all of New York, so if you are a New Yorker try it.
#2 A Pasta Bar
Even though the name is cringey the restaurant has amazing and delicious food. A Pasta Bar is a trendy and creative pasta restaurant. In my opinion the mezzi rigatoni al ragu is one of the best things on the menu; its ragu sauce is cooked meaty and flavorful, while the Rigatoni is perfectly al- dente. I promise this restaurant will surprise you with its wonderful flavor.
#1 Antoya
This restaurant deserves all the awards it has. This Michelin starred restaurant has the best decor and ambiance in all of New York. You might think that their decor is the best aspect of the restaurant, but you're wrong. Their food is so mouthwatering, delicious, and flavourful. I recommend their beef bulgogi because when you take one bite, you enter a world of tasteful flavor. If you are looking for a pleasing and garden-core restaurant I recommend this restaurant.

Wacky Advice Column, Lara, 10/11s
I sent a form to my friend Nora asking about a wacky scenario that she needs advice on. Here is her scenario and advice!
I have more than one scenario. What if Fred and George walked in and blew up some toilets? What if a hippo ate the turnstiles? What if your teacher wore a jet pack to school and flew out the window at lunchtime? What if the floor tiles changed color and revealed a message stating: the chamber of secrets has been opened. Enemies of the heir beware!" right in front of the girls' bathroom on the first floor? What if everyone except you started talking like a robot?
Well, if Fred and George came in and blew up toilets, well, that’s quite the puzzle! But I’d say, grab the brooms they flew in on, make a whole lot of duplicates, and evacuate the school on them! If a hippo ate the turnstiles… heh, well… say they're out of service, put up some caution tape (the electronics might be dangerous), and if any one needs to come inside the building, analyze their pass visually and let them in through an alternative entrance. If your teacher wore a jetpack to school and flew out the window at lunchtime, oh, they’d most likely be fired. But in the meantime, have a responsible member of your class report this and see if there are any teachers available to substitute for your jetpack teacher. If the floor tiles changed color and revealed the message: “The chamber of secrets has been opened. Enemies of the heir beware!”, then just ignore it… or at least until something happens. And last but not least, if everyone except you started talking like a robot, they’re probably pranking you, and you should tell them to knock it off. If that doesn’t work and it isn’t a prank, try your best to contact your adults and get out of the school!
So, that’s that for the wacky advice column! For now.

The Circus of Life, Claribel 10/11s
I don’t know about you, but I've definitely started a new obsession about the circus. Circus is beautiful. I believe it is an art form. But anyway, this got me thinking… If everyone here at Bank Street was in the Circus, what would they do? So I interviewed some 10/11’s and 11/12’s. Here is what they said. Nora, 10/11’s, would be the ringmaster/mistress, because she would get to lead everyone, and also she is not confident that she would be able to do another circus act without flunking. Ronit, 10/11’s, would be the manager because she can oversee all the acts and do some really cool behind the scenes stuff. Quincey, 10/11’s, would be a juggler because that’s the only thing he knows how to do circus related. Reena, 11/12’s, would be the audience because she doesn't feel like doing dangerous things. Ela, 11/12’s, would be the “bicycle on the string guy” because “it’s dangerous, and fun… probably.” Pilar, 11/12’s would be the huge pony trainer because they already take equestrian. And I would do Aerial Arts or Contortion. Go to the Circus of Life (Part 2) to see some videos and learn about animal cruelty.
The Most Difficult Math Problem
Diego, 13/14s
The Simplest Math problem that no one can solve
“Mathematics is not yet ripe enough for such questions” - Paul Erdos
Mathematics, one of the most important, and valuable studies that makes sense of things. It is taught all over the world, keeps our economy growing, and is almost everything around us, in a way. Yet there are still questions in mathematics that have not been solved yet, and may never be solved. This is where the most dangerous conjecture in mathematics yet one of the simplest conjectures appears.
The conjecture is this: If anyone is to apply two rules, any number will eventually lead to 1. It is named the Collatz Conjecture, after the German mathematician Lothar Collatz . He might have come up with it during the mid 1930s. It has other names though such as the Ulam conjecture, Hasse’s Algorithm, and most commonly 3n+1. 3x+1 Or the Collatz conjecture is so famous because of the difficulty of it, mathematicians have regarded it as one of the most difficult math problems, and one that seems almost impossible to solve.
Here is how the conjecture works. One must pick a number, any number. Say one were to choose 7, one will apply two rules. If the number is odd, you must apply the formula 3x+1, X in this case being 7. So 3*7 is 21+1 is 22, and if the number is even then you must divide by two equalling 11. One must keep applying these two rules for the conjecture to work. As the conjecture proceeds, one would come to the number 4. So 4 Divide by 2 is 2, since two is even you divide by two again, and you get one. Applying the same rule you multiply 1 by 3 and add 1. But this gets you to 4. And then once again your back at 1. So one will be stuck in a loop. Ultimately all numbers that are applied to this conjecture will come back down to the 4,2,1 cycle. This is why this conjecture is known to be impossible because no one knows how to solve it.
The numbers one gets while applying 3x+1 are called Hailstone numbers, because they go up and down like hailstone in a thundercloud, but sooner or later they will all come back down to one as far as mathematicians know. One could think of the numbers in this conjecture as height. For example these numbers could be meters. So if one were to pick the number 26, and if you apply 3x+1, it will undulate to its highest point of 40, and take 10 steps to get back into the 4,2,1 cycle. This concludes that 10 is called its stopping time. Yet if one were to take the next number, 27 while applying 3x+1 the number takes 111 steps for 27 to reach the cycle. Yet what is interesting about this is that if we look at 27 its heist point is 9232, as an altitude this is about 500 meters taller than Mount Everest but it still falls back down.
Still today mathematicians are trying to solve the problem. The head conductor of this problem is called Jeffrey Lagarias and had two specific mathematicians under his wing. When these two mathematicians on this team started to attempt solving this conjecture, they logically looked for patterns, a chink in the armor. At first, there was no pattern besides that all the numbers lead to one. But these two mathematicians started thinking about the pattern in which the numbers came to 1, and what they found out was that the pattern is random. They expressed this by taking a massive number such as 215,303,724. When applying this rule. The number peaks on the graph but again resides to 1. But if you take the logarithm and apply it to the graph, one would see a wiggly graph with descending numbers. One could compare it to the stock market on a bad day. Yet this is no coincidence between the stock market and this conjecture because both are random. If you were to take the Logarithm, and remove the linear trend, the fluctuations are again random. This mathematically, and logically concludes that 3x+1 is as random as the stock markets, meaning that it is just random in general. This idea of it being so random makes the question so difficult to solve, and what has stumped mathematicians for about a century. But soon mathematicians started looking at this problem from a different angle.
Mathematicians have been looking to prove the Collatz Conjecture false, yet not many people have tried to take it from the angle of the reverse. Looking again for why it could be true, and trying to prove that. In other mathematical questions or problems, there have been ways in which questions have been looked at from the opposite angle to solve them. Leading from this idea we now know that there are theories for why this conjecture might be false and true. As for the false mathematicians are still trying to find a number that with the laws applied from the conjecture might shoot off to infinity, or numbers that will ever go in a consistent pattern and never reach zero. On the other hand some think that there could be a case where an entirely new loop is created creating an almost circle with these questions. We (as in Mathematicians) have tested all numbers up to 268 through brute force. One might be thinking that we should have already solved it. But other mathematicians in the past have gone to lengths way farther than 268 to solve a problem. Yet questions like this are random, and this idea of it being random means that finding a specific pattern becomes almost impossible. Theories that I have mentioned are possibly true, but are also random. This randomous of mathematics and of this problem is what makes finding patterns harder than ever.
Still today no one has solved this question, and we may never, as I have said. The Collatz Conjecture, a simple problem that has driven mathematicians to the edge, known as the most dangerous and difficult problem. And yet people still try to solve it by testing numbers that go beyond the altitude of Mount Everest, and even to 268, and for my sake write papers about such a question. Yet it's possible given what we know that we may never prove the Collatz Conjecture true or false, and this is the case because math is hard. Its outrageously difficult questions still exist beyond our knowledge and it is proven through this problem. Such a simple question such as 3x+1 can not even be solved. There is something that I really loved about the Collatz Conjecture is that anyone can understand it, it is quite simple. But no one can really solve it, it's like a double edged sword, but to the brain. Since I was a kid, The impossibility of mathematical questions has always intrigued me. Being able to know something is unsolvable at the same time knowing it could be solvable reopens my love for mathematics, drawing back to Paul Erdos quote “Mathematics is not yet ripe enough for such questions.” and still now I believe it, and I also believe that for us it may never be ripe enough for such questions, and that there are still going to be questions till the end of time that might as well be unsolvable, and that is what I truly believe what math is. Something that is possible and impossible all at the same time in a string of connection.

Quiz: What Harry Potter Character Are You?Sadie, 12/13s
Welp, done with halloween! Time for regular quizzes for a while, until the next holiday. This time we’re doing What Harry Potter Character are You? Let’s go over the rules, shall we? First, pick an option, next, count the books you got, (yep, we’re changing it up again!) At the end, check how many books you have and find your answer. Let’s get to it!
It’s Halloween, What Should I be?
Veranica, 11/12s
Halloween is getting closer and closer --it's in less than a year! I know at Bankstreet we can’t go to school in our Halloween costumes because some costumes might offend different cultures or traditions. The bankstreet family handbook states “Holidays: We do not celebrate religious and other holidays at the School for Children. Such celebrations, we feel, are best acknowledged within the family. Certain holidays, however, may be a part of the instructional curriculum, allowing children to learn about cultures, religions, rituals, or important historical figures.
Who/What/Why it’s a good costume
Olivia Rodrigo
Olivia is a 18 year old singer, mostly known for her most popular songs, “Good 4 U,” “ Drivers License,” and “Jealousy Jealousy”
She's popular and she has good outfits to dress up as.
Whole Scooby Doo gang
Great group costume idea. There is Scooby, Fred, Velma, Shaggy and Daphne. They’re all great for dressing up!
Wanda Maximoff from Wanda Vision
She has powers and she is a great character and a good role model.
She's in the show Wanda Vision and she's also in some of the marvel movies.
Estella Miller From Cruella
From The new Cruella movie. A villain with a good style!
A great costume if you like fashion and dressing up into extraordinary outfits!
Coraline from the movie Coraline
Best movie ever, curious girl but full of wants.
A very popular costume that includes button eyes and a blue wig.
The corpse bride, from the Corpse Bride
A dead bride with a sad backstory
Also it’s a very very popular movie.
Just get a ripped dress and eye circles!
Devi Vishwakumar from Never Have I Ever
The main character of the new show “Never have I Ever.” Devi made some awful mistakes but went through some hard stuff. Great if you don’t really want to dress up. You might want to wear a nametag that says “Devi Vishwakumar”
Justin Bieber
No need to explain
A popular singer. Some of his most popular songs are “Baby” and “Yummy”. You can go for the baggy look or shirtless tattoo look.
Ed Sheeran
Very popular singer, more importantly a red head.
Easy costume - just a shaggy red wig with glasses.
Any type of candy
Sugar is bomb, that's all. (I mostly suggest twizzlers You need a bunch of long red sticks to wrap around yourself.)
- Halloween: This day is not celebrated at school and we ask that children not bring costumes, masks, or candy to school in-person or online. “

I like to have ice cream. But sometimes I can’t decide what cone to get it in. So which is better? Here are some pros and cons:
Waffle Cones:
They are larger, sweeter, crunchier, and are wide, so you can fit a ton of toppings. They are clearly larger, and they are ⅓ sugar! Unfortunately, that is a lot of sugar, and it is not healthy. Even though they have so much sugar, they are quite bland and flavorless. They also sometimes become soggy, and they are not so good and crunchy when they are soggy.
Cake Cones:
They are thicker, easier to balance, don’t have holes in the bottom, contain less sugar, and absorb flavor. Unfortunately, if you eat it too fast, they don’t absorb the flavor and they are bland.
I took a survey and the survey shows people like waffle cones better!

I took a survey and the survey shows people like waffle cones better!
As you can see, there are more people who like waffle cones than cake cones. Let's see why. One person who voted for waffle cones said, “Waffle cones are bigger so you get more ice cream. You also don't spill as much because the waffle cone is more of a bowl, but when you put ice cream in the cake cone it spills over and your hand gets covered in ice cream.”
Another person said, “Cake cones are gross. Discussing, abysmal, appalling, awful, deplorable, dreadful, lousy, terrible, unspeakable, and fartesque. Yuck.”
As you can see, there are some people who really prefer waffle cones. What did people who like cake cones say?
One person said, “I just don't really like waffle cones.” Another said, “It has a better texture.” Not nearly as good reasoning.
Based on the survey, and the reasoning of the people who answered the survey, more people like waffle cones than cake cones..

Halloween is My Reason for Living
Shalini, 10/11s
Halloween! Witches, ghosts, movies, parties, and best of all, trick-or-treating! I love Halloween. It’s the one day of the year when kids can get candy from strangers without parents saying “Candy is bad for your teeth!!!!!! Put the bag away!” Parents, right? Except the parents who are dentists, who may say that on Halloween too. They also may give out toothbrushes. Just kidding! Plus, even if that’s true, think of the bright side, free toothbrushes!
Okay, Okay, I’m getting off-topic. But anyway, since Halloween is coming,I thought we could get in the mood, with a Halloween story. So without further ado, let’s go!
Disclaimer: this story is fiction. I’m not saying this isn't possible, but I wouldn't worry about this happening. But if you don’t like stories that touch on mild topics like being possessed and stuff. I wouldn’t recommend this story to you.
“It was a dark and stormy night because there was a hurricane. We were having a sleepover. She was tired but she couldn’t sleep. She decided to go downstairs to get some water. She put in the ice (like she always did) but as soon as her foot touched the first step of the stairs the ice flew out of the cup and… nothing.
She never saw what happened after. This happened when she was seven, and we freaked out, ( she told me, I wasn’t there) but we forgot about it. Her name was Tamira, and on her fifteenth birthday, she became possessed.
Now, you’re probably thinking “What the…” But I’ll explain everything. Just be patient. So one day before her birthday (which is on Halloween) , She decided to go to a haunted house with our friends, Moana (of Motunui!), Nat (Natalie), and me. When we got there, she told us she was feeling light-headed. But she just decided not to worry, and drank some water.
So we go in, ready to be brave (and not to let it scare us too much) and we feel something powerful push us apart. It felt bigger than us, but it was also bigger than the wind so that couldn’t be what it was. Anyway we got separated and Tamira started feeling more and more lightheaded. It got so bad that she fainted.
When we found her, we called everyone's parents and we took her to the hospital, but the doctors couldn’t find anything wrong. They even tested her body for signs of dehydration, but again, they found nothing. We were all so confused. How can someone faint for no reason behind it? So after one grueling day of tests and surgeries, she was let out of the hospital and she went to her room and fell asleep. And that’s when it happened: the first night of what would be a long journey of being possessed.

The Trends of a Pandemic
|
up the climax of a dystopian novel. If anything, it has gotten more attention, and trends have been more influential. In the pandemic, I went through two phases, and I believe you can relate to at least one. The first one was in March and May, in which I honestly did not care about trends or clothing or fashion. But then came summer and I decided to get back into my not-so-guilty-pleasure; fashion….and Pinterest.
As much as I love fashion and trends, and pushing the boundaries, I as an individual am a little hesitant when it comes to clothes that might stand out, or wearing them in ways they’re not technically supposed to be worn. This is why I was a bit hesitant to try the layering trend invading magazines (yes, those are still a thing) and social media. But thank the higher powers I did! Layering a simple top under something one might wear in summer is not only the best way to wear something all year long, but it also looks like you put a lot of effort into something, even if you didn’t (see example here). Layering has become my go-to option for upgrading an outfit, also giving me more ways to wear one article of clothing in multiple ways. However, you have to be strategic in selecting articles of clothing that can tuck in nicely and will feel comfortable together.

Speaking of comfortable, loungewear is in. Biker shorts and an oversized tee or a baggy pair of sweatpants paired with a cami and a chunky sneaker is no longer just for lounging, it’s streetwear and I’m living for it. Now this is also tightly linked with a trend that’s been all over the place since 2019, retro. I have a fairly strict rule of thumb when categorizing what qualifies as retro. Anything from the 70s up to the late 90s is retro, anything before that is vintage and anything after that is just current fashion. Anyway, back to loungewear. A baggy sweatpant also goes great with a good graphic tee and adds some color and print. You could, if you’re feeling bold and with a deep craving of being warm, layer a blank turtle neck underneath the tee. So yes, being comfortable is definitely in, and I have nothing against it.
Of course, I didn’t cover all the trends of COVID, since that would take a lot of time, and it’s also important to know that trends vary on where you are, and who you’re talking to. Nonetheless, the pandemic brought some fabulous clothing ideas we can all try out on Zoom calls where people can compliment the top third of your layered turtleneck. If you want to see some 2020 clothing trends turned into makeup, check out Glow Up’s Fashion Editorial episode from season two!

Guide To Quarantine Baking

Oreos were invented in 1912. The first Oreo was sold on March 6th of that year. Back then, it was called “the Oreo biscuit.” Later, it was renamed “the Oreo Sandwich”. In 1948, the name was again changed to “Oreo Crѐme Sandwich.” Finally, in 1974, the name was changed to the “Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookie.” And that is still its name today. Now, in the 21st century, we just call them Oreos.
|
You might wonder, how did someone come up with the Oreo? In 1912, people had the idea to make a new cookie. The idea was to have two round biscuits, flavored chocolate, and filled with cream in the middle. The first Oreos were very similar to the ones that we have today. It’s just that the design on the biscuit was different.
The Oreo was designed with a patterned thin edge and a center. The name, “Oreo,” is placed in the middle of the outer disks of the cookie. The two outer disks are wafers and filled with what we call crѐme.
The Oreo is also sold in over 100 countries, but it is most popular in the United States. As of 2019, over 49 billion cookies have been sold and produced here in the U.S. Since the Oreo has been around, there have been 362 billion cookies sold, which makes it the best selling cookie in history.

Once you really read into how Nabisco overtook this small kosher company, it will make you second-guess when you reach for that pack of Oreos at the grocery store. Some people think that a cookie company, Nabisco, invented the Oreo. Actually, Nabisco did not invent it. A failed attempt to make a chocolate savory cookie inspired this cookie company to steal the idea, and all they really did was rename the idea of the cookie (the old name was “Hydrolix.”) and make it successfully.
To those of you who have allergies…the Oreo cookie in the U.S is egg and dairy-free! So if you are vegan, or just can’t eat eggs, Oreos are the perfect snack for sugar-loving vegans!
Now that you have heard the history of the holy Oreo cookie, maybe it will make you think that it is not just a delicious snack after all. (PS: do not eat too many, you will either get a huge sugar rush, or your teeth will get so stained that your parents will take you to the dentist once a week.)

Annual Sheep Invasion in Madrid, Tai 10/11s
Every year on a special October Sunday, more than 2,000 sheep pass through Madrid. Madrid is on an ancient route where shepherds move their animals south for the winter. The event is called Fiesta de la Trashumancia. The festival started in year 1994. Every year a fee is paid in exchange for a passage that is safe for the animals that takes place in a ceremony at the city hall between the chief herdsman and the mayor. The ceremony honours an agreement in the year 1418 with the city’s council where there was a price of 50 maravedís al millar which is 50 coins per thousands of heads of animals was made for animal traffic.
Some of the animals in the festival wear clothing. Visitors go to the event to see the strange sight. Many of the sheep wear bells which makes the streets very loud. The festival started a 10:30 am (Madrid time) in the largest park in the city, Casa de Campo. The sheep went to the city hall for the payment ceremony. There are not only sheep, there are 100 goats. All in all this is a fascinating tradition.
Favorite Cupcakes at Bank Street
Neel, Annaika, Claire 10/11s
We asked kids and grownups in 704 what their favorite cupcake flavor is, and what their favorite frosting or topping is, and if they like filling in the cupcake. It was very hard work. We recorded all data, and made a table to show it. We found how many votes each item had, and then we found the cupcake with the most vote, and then we did the same for frosting, topping, and filling or no filling. We jot down the winners below.
CUPCAKE FLAVORS:
Red velvet: 5 Vanilla: 5 Chocolate: 4 Lemon: 1 FROSTING FLAVORS: Cream cheese: 2 Chocolate: 7 Vanilla: 3 Arsenic: 1 None: 1 |
TOPPINGS:
M&Ms: 4 No toppings: 2 Sprinkles: 8 Gumeis: 3 Rainbow sprinkles: 1 Caramel: 1 FILLING OR NO FILLING: Filling: 6 No filling: 7 Depends: 1 |
We got a bunch of different answers to our questions and we want to share our data with you. Our data show that most people who we interviewed liked the cupcake flavors red velvet and vanilla. Our data also show that sprinkles are a very popular topping, along with M&M’s and gummies. This was surprising at first, because we thought that almost all the kids we interviewed would like sprinkles, since it is the classic cupcake topping. However, we got a lot of different answers, and we like it that way.
We thought that chocolate cupcake flavor would win, because in our class room it’s pretty popular. We were wrong, red velvet won; we did not know it was so popular. Chocolate did win, but it was for frosting. We did think the winner of topping would be sprinkles, because it’s pretty popular.
Thank you for reading!

An 8th Grader's Guide to Food, JP 13/14s
The Bankstreet neighborhood has many diverse, tasty, fast, and sometimes expensive choices for food. I find it hard at times to decide where to go from lack of knowledge. I am writing this for 8th graders who feel the same.
Famiglia
I can’t have this article without Famiglia. Bankstreeters have relied on this New York pizzeria for ages. Some 8th graders rely on Famiglia for lunch every day! Although, their $3 pizza can be sickening, it is a good close option if you want to quickly get your food and then hang out in the cafeteria with friends. Many classic food conservatives love the standard New York pizza they serve.

Panda Express
Panda Express is one of my favorites. Although it is not too popular since it is all the way across the street, there are a few daily customers. Panda Express is probably the fastest served food in the neighborhood. Alexander, an 8th grader describes it as, “affordable, warm, and healthy joint to go to.” On a good day, you can order and receive your food in about two minutes. It serves a limited amount of Chinese foods and ingredients that you put together in a plate or bowl. I do not recommend going there if you are not interested in purchasing their chicken. They also give an additional fortune cookie with every order. One time, they even gave me an extra.
Pret a Manger
Pret a Manger is a great option. It represents a nicer version of your local Starbucks. Although, it is fairly expensive. An average lunch costs about eleven dollars! The last time I went, I ordered a container of soup, and a cup of pineapples. My friends ordered chips, yogurt, and sandwiches. Pret a Manger is a great option for lunch if you are willing to pay a semi-large amount.
Junzi Kitchen
I visited Junzi Kitchen for the first time in the beginning of the year and I ordered the Furu Tofu. It was healthy, affordable, though not too fast. I enjoyed it at that time so I went back a bit later. I ordered the Furu Tofu again and so did my friend. So, I waited about 10 minutes and my time for lunch narrowed down. It was 12:13 and I had to be back at Bankstreet at 12:15. When I got my food and paid it turned out it was my friend’s because he got another topping. I gave it to him and waited for them to make mine, which took a while as well. They gave me a free Oolong Tea that resembled the taste of water. By the time I got my lunch I was late so I rushed to school. When I opened my lunch it was way smaller than my friends. I then realized they gave me Furu chicken instead of furu tofu! I decided I was not going there again but my friends convinced me otherwise. Long story short, they messed up the order up again for my friend. They mixed the orders up for me, my two friends, and another customer. The service was faulty and we ended up being ten minutes late to school.
Chipotle
I am sure you know of the Mexican fast food place around the corner. It is fast, affordable, and the food is moderately good. I usually order two tacos for a price of $6. I get soft-shell and they pass it down the the counter asking me what ingredients I would like to include. Alexander, our 8th grade critic says it is, “easily an everyday place - I go there at least once or twice a week!” That pretty much sums up this everyday joint.
Milano Market
Milano is a classic New York place that offers a wide variety of food options such as bagels, delicious sandwiches, pasta, salads, sushi, and much more. I strongly suggest their freshly made sandwiches, although they are very expensive. One sandwich is adequate for two children, so buying one sandwich for two kids is a plausible idea. I would not describe Milano as an everyday lunch place but once every few weeks it is a great option.
Wu and Nussbaum
Previously Nussbaum and Wu, a restaurant and deli serving mainly bagels, now we have Wu and Nussbaum, primarily focusing on more Chinese cuisine. After 20 years of great business, Nussbaum and Wu closed down. Out of that, Wu and Nussbaum started up, keeping the New York cuisine alive, while adding a full Chinese menu. The prices of this deli consists of an affordable $1.50 and the rest have very different prices. A few times this past year I have decided to purchase lunch at Wu and Nussbaum only to find that the line was way too long for the time I had.
